The use of high-resolution side-scan sonar in underwater search and rescue operations.

Every year, thousands of people lose their lives by drowning in deep waters. This unfortunate situation brings with it complex and challenging search operations.

Police, Fire Departments, and Special Search and Rescue teams face the arduous task of searching large underwater areas during such incidents. In addition to this, one of the main challenges is that the waters (oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, etc.) where the search and rescue operations take place are often moving, with very limited visibility. This leads to a prolonged and dangerous process.

In some waters, visibility can be less than 1 meter, and calculating the target’s position becomes extremely difficult due to currents.
Technological tools like sonar, which are specifically designed and developed for such missions, are both time-efficient and energy-saving for underwater teams. Furthermore, the life-threatening risks for the search and rescue teams are minimized through the use of sonar technology.
Recently, a drowning incident occurred in Lake Dzierzno Duze in southern Poland. The Polish Special Divers Group, a renowned name in the field of Search and Rescue, successfully completed the mission using their equipment and skills, with the EdgeTech 4125 Side-Scan Sonar being their greatest aid. The team was able to scan a 500×300 meter area quickly and clearly, allowing divers to make pinpoint dives and complete the operation swiftly and successfully.
EdgeTech’s Full Spectrum CHIRP technology provides up to 50% higher resolution images compared to other products on the market. This enables the key criteria of “Target Accuracy” and “Quick Response” to be met successfully in search and rescue operations. The 600/1600 kHz frequency set offers an excellent combination of long-range scanning and high resolution.
The 4125 can be operated using both AC and DC (standard 12v battery). EdgeTech’s easy-to-use software is also integrated into the system. The system includes:
• Target Logger and Coverage Mapper modules,
• 50 m Conductive Kevlar Tow Cable.
Operators can quickly scan suspicious areas and clearly identify objects using the high-resolution images provided by the 4125 system. While other sonars produce blurry and confusing images, EdgeTech sonar allows time to be used in the most efficient way.
Sonars that fail to provide a clear identification force divers to enter the search area, resulting in a loss of time and effort. Objects not clearly identified by the sonar must be searched and confirmed by divers.
With the clear images and locations obtained from the 4125, divers can directly dive to the precisely identified target, providing great benefits in terms of time and energy. Additionally, the sonar helps the operator identify areas unsuitable for diving. The clear images provided by the sonar also assist in identifying other underwater objects, such as logs, rocks, wreckage, etc.
Images obtained with the 4125 sonar do not appear as gray shadows like with other scanning devices. This technology allows for the precise identification of bodies or objects in high resolution. The EdgeTech 4125 Side-Scan Sonar has become the preferred equipment for many police, fire departments, and search and rescue teams.
